Michigan Parenting Time Guidelines

Michigan law establishes a presumption that it is in the best interests of a child(ren) to have strong relationships with both parents. This 43 page SCAO document describes the general and specific dimensions of “parenting time.”

The Child Custody Act of 1970, MCL 722.23

The “best interests of the child” standard is used in custody disputes between parents, agencies, and third parties. The court must consider each of the twelve factors and make findings on the record. The court determines the weight of each factor.

The “100 Mile Rule”

A law which requires the non-relocating parent’s consent before a child is moved out-of-state or more than 100 miles from the child’s residence. 

Grandparent Visitation

This 2005 law provides greater standing to grandparents seeking visitation with their grandchildren.

Support & Parenting Time Enforcement Act, MCL 552.601- 552.650.

“Support” means the court-ordered payment of money for a child, including payment of the medical, dental, and other health care expenses; child care expenses; and educational expenses. (MCL 552.602(ff)(i).)
